ROMANIA


Forcenturies under the control of the Turkish Ottoman Empire and secured in their autonomy in 1856, they were connect in 1859 and formally united in 1862 under the new name of Romania. The country gained recognition its independence in 1878.
It joined the allied power in WWI and then, Romania allied in 1941 with Germany in the invasion of the USSR.
The decades rule a dictator: Nicolae Ceausescu, who took the power in 1965. Ceausescu was overthrown and executed in 1989. Former communists domination of the goverment was until 1996, when they were swept from power. Romania joined NATO in 2004 and the EU in 2007.
